A working airfield near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, Shuttleworth is home to a worldrenowned Collection of aircraft – many the last remaining airworthy examples of their type – veteran vehicles, vintage buses and working steam exhibits. The site also features a Regency Garden in the ‘Swiss Picturesque ’ style, Swiss Garden, plus an on-site café. Shuttleworth House primarily hosts conferences and business events and is a very popular wedding venue. Shuttleworth hosts a range of events throughout the year from Air Shows to steam fayres, and so much more, as well as regular educational and group visits. The site is also home to the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society, The Friends of The Swiss Garden and the Shuttleworth Fire Service.

The Collection

Honouring the legacy of our patron, Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth, the Shuttleworth Collection is a treasure trove of airworthy vintage aircraft from 1909-1950, agricultural and steam exhibits, veteran vehicles, classic motorcycles, bicycles, carriages, and buses.

Beautifully restored, this RHS partner garden is a unique example of a Regency Garden in the ‘Alpine ’ s tyle.

Shuttleworth House

Shuttleworth House hosts a range of events throughout the year, as well as being a hugely popular wedding venue. There are various spaces available for corporate bookings and away-days.

The Shuttleworth Trust – registered charity: 307534 – was set up to honour the life and legacy of Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth, a keen aviator, racing driver and horse racer, who was tragically killed in 1940 during a night training exercise for the RAF.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Role Overview:

Salary: Competitive package, dependent on experience

Work Hours: 40hrs (08:00 - 17:00 ) 5 out 7 days per week

The Shuttleworth Collection is seeking a versatile and enthusiastic engineer to support the maintenance, restoration, and continued airworthiness of its historic aircraft fleet. This role is ideal for an individual with experience in aviation: maintenance, repair and overhaul or engineering: design, development or manufacturing.

Working as part of the Engineering Department, you will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance, and engineering excellence across all maintenance and restoration activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Continued Airworthiness Management
• Assist with maintenance planning, scheduling, and control activities.
• Support the development and management of maintenance programmes.
• Review and assess airworthiness information and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with the preparation of maintenance work packs and supporting documentation.
• Coordinate with stakeholders, customers, and engineering personnel to ensure airworthiness requirements are met.

Restoration Project Support

• Assist in the planning and coordination of aircraft restoration projects.
• Support project management activities throughout restoration programmes.
• Source and procure aircraft components, materials, and specialist services.
• Monitor and coordinate subcontracted work to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.

Engineering Research and Technical Development

• Research and develop repair and modification schemes.
• Identify and evaluate alternative materials, manufacturing methods, and repair techniques.
• Prepare technical documentation for submission to relevant airworthiness authorities.
• Source specialist engineering suppliers and manufacturing partners.

Team Support and Leadership

• Work collaboratively with engineering, quality, and operational teams.
• Exercise the privileges of any relevant engineering licences, approvals, or company authorisations.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering procedures and working practices.

Working Relationships:

Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks in accordance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and recognised engineering best practices.

You will work closely with members of the engineering team, quality personnel, volunteers, apprentices, and external suppliers to support the engineering objectives of the Shuttleworth Collection.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Qualifications:

Applicants should possess one of the following:

• Degree, HND/HNC, or NVQ Level 5 qualification in Aeronautical Engineering or a related discipline; or
• EASA/UK Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence, BCAR Category A or C licence, or equivalent qualification; or
• Relevant company engineering authorisations and demonstrable industry experience

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Understanding of engineering materials, manufacturing techniques, and production processes.
• Knowledge of aviation materials, aircraft structures, aerodynamics, and propulsion systems.
• Strong organisational and technical problemsolving abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
• A minimum of three years' experience in one or more of the following areas:

Aviation

• Aircraft maintenance
• Aircraft repair
• Aircraft manufacturing
• Aircraft overhaul
• Airworthiness management

Engineering

• Design engineering
• Manufacturing engineering
• Testing and validation
• Materials science

Desirable Experience:

• Continued Airworthiness Management (CAMO).
• Aircraft maintenance planning.
• Procurement of specialist engineering parts and materials.
• Management of subcontractors and external suppliers.
• CAD design and technical drawing software.
