Our client is a well-respected International Commodity Trading Company based in Central London who are looking to recruit a bright, numerate graduate with commercial flair to join them as a Trainee Trader. Trainee Traders are intended to become the future leaders of the business and will have the opportunity for advancement in a fascinating and fast-paced industry (most of the directors within the company originally joined as trainees!).

Your training will cover all elements of international trading, from negotiation through to shipping and finance. Working closely with the Traders, Senior Traders and specialist internal departments, Graduate Trainee Traders will execute trading contracts booked by Traders, implement all relevant administrative and handling functions in line with company practices, existing laws and regulations, and the conditions of individual contracts. You will also liaise with multiple internal departments including Trade Finance, Shipping, Risk Management, Legal, Insurance and Accounts, as well as external companies such as banks, customers, suppliers, ports, etc.

You will live and breathe the work of your Senior Trader, undertake in-house and external training to develop all the skills needed to progress to become an excellent commodity trader in the future.

DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting traders to book new transactions.
  • Issuing contracts for new transactions.
  • Working with Trade Finance on the financing arrangements for transactions.
  • Securing, checking, approving adequate and complete documentation, both incoming and outgoing covering both the purchasing and sales of the commodity.
  • Ensuring prompt invoicing out and payments in, liaising with accounts as necessary.
  • Working with Shipping and Insurance to arrange the transport of the commodities.
  • Liaising with suppliers and customers to ensure a timely and smooth execution of all contracts.
  • Liaising with other administrative departments (including accounts) to trigger all necessary actions and, where necessary, establishing credit and debit notes or other internal documents related to contractual conditions.
  • Solving delivery problems in cooperation/coordination with the traders.
  • Assisting traders to resolve claims with suppliers and clients.
  • Executing all necessary actions within the computer systems to ensure a regular and continuous up to date status of orders to ensure correct reporting at all times.
  • Arranging issuance of original documentation with external parties such as inspection agents, insurance companies, Chambers of Commerce, and the delivery of those documents as needed internationally.
  • Undertaking your training and development tasks.
  • Any other reasonable tasks as requested.

KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Minimum 2:1 Degree from leading university in a relevant subject.
  • High proficiency / fluency in both French and Arabic would be highly advantageous.
  • Fluency in English essential – both written & oral.
  • Positive and flexible team player.
  • Good organisation skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and international environment.
  • Evidence of being commercial / entrepreneurial, ideally with some negotiation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
