Job Description
Our client is a marketing and trading business supporting global energy operations. They are involved in equity production marketing, third-party trading, shipping, storage, and derivatives. The organisation operates across global time zones and continues to grow its European customer base across a range of energy products.
Due to continued expansion, we are seeking a responsible for the end-to-end management of freight chartering and cargo logistics for oil trading activities, ensuring optimal commercial performance. The role encompasses chartering of vessels, cargo operations, and demurrage management, while ensuring compliance with contracts and internal processes. The Charterer will play a key role in maximising value through effective freight negotiations, operational execution, and accurate claim handling.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Chartering & Freight Management:
- Negotiate spot and term charters with shipowners or brokers, ensuring optimal freight economics.
- Ensure compliance with internal freight strategy and vetting requirements.
- Assess market trends and provide freight market intelligence to the trading team.
- Issue voyage orders, monitor freight exposure, and manage freight P&L.
- Coordinate with HQ shipping teams.
Demurrage & Claims:
- Proactively track and calculate laytime and demurrage for both owned and chartered vessels.
- Handle submission and resolution of demurrage claims in line with contractual terms.
- Liaise with counterparties, terminals, and legal as needed to support claims recovery.
- Monitor well the time bar issue for all chartered vessels and third-party trade.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Maintain strong working relationships with trading, legal, finance, and compliance teams.
- Coordinate with internal OPS teams on vessel vetting and port restrictions.
- Ensure timely and accurate data entry in trading and operations systems.
- Manage end-to-end shipping logistics for crude cargoes, from nomination to discharge.
- Oversee the appointment of ship agents, surveyors, and inspectors.
- Coordinate vessel nominations, port documentation, and clearance processes.
- Track vessel progress and handle voyage execution to minimise delays and disruptions.
Compliance & Administration:
- Ensure all contractual, insurance, and regulatory obligations are fulfilled.
- Maintain accurate operational records for audit and analysis purposes.
EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Strong commercial awareness and negotiation skills.
- Understanding of shipping contracts (e.g., charter parties, sales contracts).
- Experience in laytime and demurrage calculation and claims handling.
- Proficient in operational systems and Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and process-driven.
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous experience in chartering and operations.
- A good working knowledge of the energy trading and shipping environment
- Familiarity with Letters of Credit and shipping documentation.
- Experience with blending operations is a plus.
