I am looking for a qualified, technically experienced, commercially astute Warranty & Technical Engineer to join a heavy plant maintenance department. This role is a hands-on engineering position focusing on diagnostics, warranty recovery, OEM relationships and continuous improvement across a modern Tier V earthworks fleet (Volvo, Komatsu, Caterpillar, Bell etc.).

You will work closely with the existing team to deliver sustained & positive maintenance outcomes to maximise fleet uptime and minimise cost of ownership by delivering robust technical diagnostics, warranty recovery, OEM liaison and maintenance process improvement. You will act as the technical point of contact for the company’s fleet across major OEMs, driving warranty claims, complete forensic investigations of failures, and data-led fleet improvements.

This position will report into the Head of Field Service and work closely with the Warranty & Technical manager. The job will primarily be based at the company’s head offices in Caldicot with national travel to the company’s sites expected when required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead warranty claim lifecycle: fault analysis, evidence collection, OEM engagement, claim submission and escalation to secure valid warranty recoveries.
  • Maintain and improve the warranty claims process (templates, evidence standards, timescales) to increase success rate and reduce out-of-pocket costs.
  • Provide technical input into warranty & maintenance negotiations to help reduce cost exposure.
  • Assist field engineers and sites with troubleshooting guidance and remote diagnostics when required.
  • Provide advanced fault diagnosis and root cause analysis for breakdowns and repeat failures.
  • Analyse maintenance, breakdown and fleet telemetry data to identify trends, failure hotspots and cost drivers.
  • Own / evolve processes, checklists and standards to reduce repeat failures and improve engineer first-time fix rates.
  • Work directly with OEMs to manage relationships to further improve standards whilst escalating warranty and repetitive failures where relevant.
  • Feed into the Asset and Operations department with critical data-led feedback on select models & brands, helping to influence procurement and operational strategies.
Job Skills & Requirements:
  • 10 years+ NVQ Qualified Plant Engineer or time served engineer with demonstrable experience working on modern Tier V equipment across major OEM brands, e.g. Volvo, Caterpillar, Komatsu.
  • Deep component & systems knowledge of heavy plant engines, aftertreatment, hydraulics, electronics & CANbus etc.
  • Wear component knowledge, i.e. tyres, undercarriage, GET etc. is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong diagnostics & fault-finding experience using OEM diagnostic tools & telematics.
  • Data literate - able to interrogate maintenance records and telematics to identify trends and quantify warranty opportunity.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Power BI or similar.
  • Commercial awareness: experience interacting with OEMs / dealers on claims and commercial technical discussions.
  • Clear technical reporting skills - defining root cause analysis & technical reports for claims & OEM discussions.
  • Strong H&S understanding, use of PTWs, POWRAs, risk assessments etc. and how this underpins the maintenance function.
  • Ideal candidates would be quick learners, able to work on own initiative, self-motivated, and have a willingness to attend internal and external training courses.
  • Collaborative and able to work as part of a team, to deliver collective improvements & results.
