About Ricardo

Ricardo is a trusted engineering partner specialising in complex propulsion, driveline, and energy systems. We work with customers globally to deliver end-to-end solutions from initial design through to full production.

The Role

We are looking for a thorough and detailed individual to join our Quality team in this hands-on role. Reporting directly to the Head of Compliance, you will be responsible for ensuring that the inspection capabilities of all manufacturing technicians and inspectors meet the required standards for a no-fault forward methodology. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining the calibration system within the manufacturing and assembly areas.

You will ideally be an experienced component inspector from a low volume precision engineering background, experienced in batch machining with the diligence to audit the inspection work carried out by both manufacturing technicians and inspectors. You will ultimately be responsible for ensuring that all technicians are capable of inspecting work correctly, using the right equipment.

The role holder has the autonomy to adjust and refine the audit plan as needed, making changes to the scheduled plan in response to findings or operational priorities. Problems encountered are generally routine in nature, with solutions often drawn from personal experience or the knowledge of colleagues. The variety of issues that may arise requires logical thinking and a methodical approach to reach effective resolutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for auditing approximately 20 team members, including weekly reviews of new starters, assessing capability and correct use of inspection tools.
  • Provide recommendations on audit frequency for each individual based on audit results and any identified quality escapes.
  • Produce weekly reports summarising audit activity and maintain an up-to-date capability matrix, determining individual audit intervals.
  • Establish, maintain, and continuously improve an objective and robust audit process.
  • Although the role has no formal line management responsibilities, it requires ongoing professional, supportive interaction with colleagues across the Quality and Manufacturing teams.
  • Provide guidance and act as a technical reference for others performing similar inspection and auditing work.

Skills and Experience

  • Senior level inspection of precision machined components in a batch environment.
  • Fully conversant with engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with all team members, influencing positive difference to KPI's and the Quality culture, encouraging accountability at all times.
  • Experience with product & process auditing.
  • A background in inspecting low-volume precision-machined steels and castings is essential.
  • Knowledge of gears and gear geometry would be a strong advantage.
  • Computer literacy is essential.
  • Demonstrates a proactive and innovative approach to supporting the team, with a natural drive to contribute to continuous improvement and a willingness to go the extra mile to achieve quality enhancements.
  • Able to recommend appropriate audit frequencies for each individual based on audit findings and identified quality escapes.
  • Knowledge of ISO17025 Testing and calibration laboratories or ISO 10012 - Requirements for measurement management systems.
  • Awareness of Calibration and control of measuring systems.

Additional details

  • This position will be based at PP MTC (Leamington Spa).
  • Work will primarily be on the day shift.
  • Periodic auditing of the night shift and weekend night shift (around once per month) is required.
  • No routine travel is expected, though occasional travel may be necessary to support operational needs.
  • This role is not expected to include direct customer-facing activities.
