Are you passionate about supporting young people who have struggled to engage with mainstream education?

Ribbons & Reeves are working with a specialist school in Greenwich, South East London, seeking a resilient, enthusiastic and committed Behaviour Mentor to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural difficulties and additional barriers to learning.

The school provides a fresh start for students who may have experienced exclusions, disrupted education or difficulties managing their behaviour in mainstream settings. You will play an important role in helping students rebuild confidence, develop positive relationships and re-engage with education.

You do not necessarily need previous school experience. Graduates, aspiring teachers, youth workers, sports coaches and individuals with experience supporting challenging behaviour are encouraged to apply.

The Role – Behaviour Mentor

  • Supporting students with SEMH needs, behavioural difficulties and additional learning barriers.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with young people who may have struggled within mainstream education.
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group behavioural support inside and outside the classroom.
  • Using positive reinforcement, clear boundaries and consistent routines to encourage positive behaviour.
  • Supporting emotional regulation, conflict resolution and the development of social skills.
  • Helping students manage frustration, anxiety and challenging situations through calm communication and appropriate de-escalation strategies.
  • Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff to maintain a safe, structured and purposeful learning environment.
  • Encouraging attendance, engagement and positive attitudes towards education.

What We're Looking For

  • A genuine interest in supporting young people with additional needs and behavioural challenges.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • The confidence to establish boundaries while building positive relationships.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage young people from different backgrounds.
  • Someone proactive, adaptable and willing to get involved.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to remain consistent when faced with challenging behaviour.

Previous experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • SEMH / Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • PRU / Pupil Referral Units
  • Alternative Provision (AP)
  • Behaviour Mentoring or Pastoral Support
  • Youth Work / Residential Care
  • Sports Coaching / Youth Offending Support
  • Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant roles

What the School Offers

  • A full-time, long-term opportunity within a specialist SEMH environment.
  • The chance to make a genuine difference to students who need additional support.
  • Valuable experience for graduates considering careers in teaching, educational psychology, youth work or pastoral education.
  • A supportive team with experienced teaching and pastoral professionals.
  • The opportunity to develop specialist experience in behaviour management, safeguarding and SEMH support.
