Behaviour Mentor - PRU Are you passionate about helping young people who have struggled in mainstream education and need someone to believe in them?
A supportive Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Lewisham is looking for a resilient and engaging Behaviour Mentor to work with young people who may have experienced exclusion, disengagement and challenging behaviour.
With small class sizes and a strong focus on re-engagement , this is an opportunity to build genuine relationships with students and help them develop the confidence, resilience and behaviours needed to move forward.
The Role
As a Behaviour Mentor, you will:
Build positive, trusting relationships with students who may be reluctant to engage with education
Support young people with SEMH, behavioural and emotional needs
Work with students who may have experienced exclusion or repeated difficulties in mainstream education
Provide 1:1 and small-group mentoring
Support students to regulate their emotions and manage challenging situations
Encourage attendance, engagement and positive participation in learning
Help students develop confidence, resilience and independence
Support teachers during lessons and help students remain focused
Use calm, consistent approaches to de-escalate challenging behaviour
Work alongside teaching and pastoral staff to maintain clear boundaries and expectations
Help create a safe, structured and positive environment
About You
The ideal candidate will be:
Experienced working with children or young people
Resilient, patient and confident when managing challenging behaviour
Able to build relationships with young people who may initially be resistant or disengaged
Calm and consistent, particularly during difficult situations
A strong communicator who can maintain professional boundaries
Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education
Adaptable and willing to work as part of a wider pastoral and teaching team
Previous experience in a PRU, AP, SEMH school, youth work, mentoring, care or behaviour support would be advantageous, but is not essential.
