A welcoming primary school in Bishops Stortford is seeking a resilient, adaptable and relationship-focused Learning Support Assistant to join their team as soon as possible. This is a split role across the school day. Half the day will be spent as a general Teaching Assistant in Year 3, supporting the class teacher and pupils with their learning. The second half will involve providing dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 3 pupil with autism who presents challenging behaviour.

The successful candidate must have a proven track record of supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour and be confident remaining calm and consistent in complex or unpredictable situations. Experience using de-escalation, clear boundaries and positive behaviour strategies would be highly beneficial.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the Year 3 class as a general TA for half the school day
  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 3 pupil with autism
  • Implement behaviour, communication and regulation strategies
  • Build a trusting relationship based on consistency and clear expectations
  • Support emotional regulation, transitions and engagement with learning
  • Monitor behaviour and progress and provide feedback to the SENCO and teaching team
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and external professionals

The successful candidate will:

  • Have proven experience supporting challenging behaviour essential
  • Have previous experience working with children or young people
  • Be patient, resilient and emotionally confident
  • Have excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Be adaptable and able to work effectively in both classroom and 1:1 settings
  • Have a genuine interest in SEND and autism support
