Are you an ambitious graduate looking to gain valuable school-based experience before pursuing a career in education? A high-achieving secondary school in Watford is seeking a motivated Graduate Academic Mentor to join the school from September 2026 to July 2027.
As a Graduate Academic Mentor, you will work alongside teachers to provide targeted academic support, helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and close gaps in attainment. The Academic Mentor role will involve general classroom support, one-to-one guidance and small-group interventions across different subjects.

Graduate Academic Mentor | The Role

  • Support pupils in lessons across different subjects
  • Deliver one-to-one and small-group interventions
  • Provide targeted academic support and help close learning gaps
  • Encourage confidence, engagement and independence
  • Support literacy interventions, including reading, writing and comprehension
  • Potentially provide small-group teaching and targeted support within English


Graduate Academic Mentor | Person Specification

  • A 2:1 or First-Class degree; an English degree would be particularly desirable
  • Alternatively, strong English Literature A-Level results, ideally an A or A*
  • Passionate about education and supporting young people
  • Confident communicator with strong written and verbal English
  • Proactive, adaptable and able to build positive relationships
  • Patient, resilient and committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing


This Academic Mentor position offers broad experience in secondary education, with academic mentoring and general pupil support at its core.
The successful Academic Mentor will also have opportunities to contribute to literacy and English interventions where appropriate, making this an excellent stepping stone towards a career in education.
