We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SLD Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and well-resourced Special School in Hounslow, supporting pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and associated complex needs. This SLD Teaching Assistant is a highly rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about specialist education and inclusive practice within a nurturing and structured learning environment.

As a SLD Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with experienced SEN teachers and a multidisciplinary team to support pupils' learning, communication, independence, and emotional wellbeing, helping them to reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support as an SLD Teaching Assistant, following individual EHCPs and personalised learning plans.
  • Support pupils with communication needs using AAC approaches, including Makaton, visual timetables, symbols, and sensory cues.
  • Assist in delivering differentiated learning activities focused on functional skills, independence, and life skills.
  • Support pupils with sensory processing needs and emotional regulation, enabling positive engagement with learning.
  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, therapists, and support staff to implement consistent and effective SEN strategies.
  • Help maintain a structured, calm, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes confidence, engagement, and wellbeing.
  • Observe, monitor, and record pupil progress, contributing to reviews and multi-agency meetings where appropriate.
  • Support pupils during transitions, routines, and unstructured times throughout the school day.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience working with children or young people with SLD or complex SEND, ideally within a special school or specialist setting.
  • A good understanding of severe learning difficulties, communication differences, and inclusive SEN practice.
  • A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach, with the ability to respond positively to individual needs.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with confidence working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEN, or a related field is desirable (but not essential).
  • An up-to-date Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one).
