Are you committed to supporting pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) in a specialist education setting? A welcoming and well-resourced Special School in Barking & Dagenham is seeking a dedicated SLD Learning Support professional to work with pupils who have SLD and complex additional needs. This is a rewarding opportunity to support inclusive practice and make a meaningful difference within a structured and nurturing environment.

The Role

As an SLD Learning Support, you will work closely with SEN teachers and specialist professionals to support pupils' learning, communication, independence, and emotional wellbeing. Your role will be central to helping pupils access education and develop confidence across the school day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivering personalised 1:1 and small-group support in line with EHCPs and individual learning plans
  • Supporting communication through AAC strategies, including Makaton, visual timetables, symbols, and sensory aids
  • Assisting with differentiated activities focused on functional learning, independence, and life skills
  • Supporting pupils with sensory processing and emotional regulation needs
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff
  • Maintaining a calm, inclusive, and structured classroom environment
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress to support reviews and assessments
  • Supporting pupils during transitions, routines, and unstructured times

About You:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SLD or complex SEN
  • A strong understanding of severe learning difficulties and inclusive SEN practice
  • A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach
  • Confident communication skills and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • A Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEN, or a related area (desirable, not essential)
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
