An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Architect or Architectural Consultant to lead the design and construction supervision of the proposed renovation and refurbishment of the consular Uganda House building located in Trafalgar Square. This role includes varying aspects from concept design through to technical packages and will require construction oversight on site. The successful consultant will work directly with the commission as the primary client, taking full ownership of design quality, technical output, and programme delivery of this project.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the project across all applicable RIBA stages through to completion on site.
- Develop concept design, planning submissions, and full technical design packages for the renovation and refurbishment works.
- Produce comprehensive tender and construction documentation, including the coordination of specialist consultants.
- Manage client relationships and maintain clear project communication with multiple stakeholders.
- Coordinate the full multidisciplinary consultant team — structural, M&E, and specialist advisors.
- Liaise with planning authorities, building control, and relevant statutory bodies.
- Administer the construction contract on site, managing RFIs, contractor queries, and subcontractor coordination.
- Maintain compliance with UK Building Regulations, planning legislation, and any heritage or conservation constraints applicable to the building and its setting.
- Oversee project programmes, budgets, and delivery timelines throughout the commission.
- Conduct feasibility appraisals, site analysis, concept layouts, and planning submissions.
Key Skills and Experience
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- ARB-registered architect or equivalent, with a minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience.
- Demonstrable experience leading the design and delivery of renovation, refurbishment, of heritage projects in Central London or comparable contexts.
- Strong technical knowledge of UK construction detailing, Building Regulations, and planning policy.
- Proven experience in contract administration and procurement routes across RIBA stages.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams and managing complex stakeholder relationships.
- Proficiency in industry-standard software — ArchiCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of heritage constraints relevant to a listed or sensitive Central London building.
- Ability to commit to the full project timeline through to contract signature and beyond.
