Our client is one of the UK’s largest suppliers and a first-choice provider of hardwood timber access mats for both sale and hire nationwide. They are a well-respected leader within the construction, energy, and utilities sectors.
The Role
We are seeking a full-time, permanent, hands-on Yard Manager to join a busy depot in Stratford-upon-Avon. This is an operational, non-desk-based role where you will lead from the front, working alongside Yard Operatives and actively participating in the day-to-day running of the yard. The position involves regular manual labour, including cleaning timber mats and working outdoors in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience operating telehandlers/forklift trucks and a strong background in a similar yard or construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the yard
- Operate telehandlers (valid licence essential)
- Load and offload articulated vehicles
- Sort and manually clean hire and returned mats
- Maintain yard organisation and stock control in line with company standards
- Complete and maintain accurate operational paperwork
- Manage and supervise Yard Operatives, including performance reviews and holiday approvals
- Coordinate staffing requirements with temporary agencies when needed
- Ensure full compliance with health and safety procedures
- Conduct stock checks and maintain stock accuracy
- Arrange servicing and maintenance of yard equipment
- Organise skip changes and obtain quotes for consumables and minor repairs
- Monitor fuel levels and support ordering processes
- Support senior management in the ongoing development of yard operations
- Provide regular updates to senior management on performance and operations
- Carry out any other duties appropriate to the role
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience operating telehandlers in a commercial or construction environment (valid licence required)
- Demonstrable experience in a supervisory or management role within a yard or similar environment
- Experience handling construction and hire-based products
- Strong understanding of basic HR processes and team management
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Excel
- Strong leadership and team management abilities
- Full UK driving licence
- Reliable, punctual, and proactive with a strong work ethic
- Physically fit and capable of performing labour-intensive duties outdoors in all weather conditions
