Position Overview
RBSL is working on projects to deliver training solutions for the British Army's new Challenger 3 (CR3) Main Battle Tank (MBT). Using Game Engines and 3D toolsets, we will work with CAD, complex instructional and procedural data to deliver cutting‑edge interactive training solutions. This role reports to the Simulation and Visualisation Lead.
Responsibilities
- Work with subject‑matter experts (SMEs) and engineers to visually interpret complex mechanical systems, processes, or assembly steps
- Import, clean, and prepare CAD models for use in Unreal Engine
- Create models/assets where required, following a cost‑efficient approach
- Optimise geometry and assets to meet real‑time performance requirements
- Create and manage UVs, materials, and textures for the solution
- Rig mechanical and interactive models to support animations in Unreal Engine
- Work closely with the team to support asset integration and functionality
- Maintain organised asset libraries and project documentation
- Create exciting and professional promotional visualisation material for current and future projects
- Develop clear and readable visualisations for training steps, indicators, animations, and guidance elements
- Support programming team by creating skeletal and animation setups
- Contribute to continuous improvement of development methodology and delivery pipeline
- Work with Customer, User, Engineering and Procurement teams to assist in resolving design queries, problems and conflicts
- Schedule own work to meet target timescales and deliverable milestones
- Perform self‑verification of own tasks to ensure completeness and quality of information
- Provide engineering input to project submissions including cost estimating, project plans, and progress reports
Qualifications
- Degree‑qualified in Computer Games Art or a relevant games discipline with post‑graduate experience in a suitable artist role
- Extensive experience of 3D modelling software (Blender/3DS Max), including High and Low Poly Modelling, UV Unwrapping and Layout, Rigging, Realistic Material and Texture Creation, Animation Workflows, Import/Export Pipeline Management
- Ability to identify and develop new visualisation capabilities required by the business and maintain legacy products
- Good communication skills – capable of discussing technical solutions with non‑technical colleagues
- Ability to work effectively with anyone with different skill sets, personalities, work styles, or motivation level
- Ability to build trust, find common ground, have empathy, and ultimately build good relationships with people at all levels in both customer / supplier and RBSL communities
Desirable
- Knowledge of Unreal Engine 5, including Asset Pipeline Performance Optimisation, Material Editor and workflows, Lighting and Rendering Pipeline, Niagara VFX
- Proficiency in Agile development experience
- Decimation and Optimisation of 3D CAD models (Pixyz)
- Experience working with CAD data in Games Engines
- PlasticSCM/Unity version control, Youtrack issue and task tracking
