RBSL is looking for an experienced Safety Engineer to join the busy Challenger 3 Safety team. Previous experience with Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME), and in the design or operation of armoured fighting vehicles within the defence environment, is preferred. Given the nature of this role, only candidates with valid full Security Clearance, or those that meet the SC requirements (i.e. 5 year UK residency), will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying and analysing potential hazards and risks with the design and operation of military vehicles.
  • Supporting the systems, trials, design, and sub-system teams to ensure those risks are minimised.
  • Maintaining and operating in accordance with a Safety, Environmental and Legislative management plan.
  • Interacting with suppliers and suppliers’ safety information to ensure receipt of complete and credible subsystem safety and environmental cases.
  • Determining the appropriate approaches to ensure safety of equipment.
  • Establishing safety targets with decomposition into sub system targets and requirements.
  • Facilitating and chairing Hazard Identification and Hazard Analysis meetings on behalf of customer and project.
  • Undertaking safety analysis utilising a variety of techniques such as Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Providing guidance to engineering and other functional departments in relation to their Safety, Environmental and Legislative requirements.
  • Generating and maintaining a robust Hazard Log.
  • Providing support to assurance that the design is adequate, underpinned by supporting evidence for the safety case.
  • Generating coherent safety justifications and Safety Case Reports on behalf of customers and projects.
  • Competently and confidently interacting with Suppliers, Customer and User at all levels.

What Qualifications You Should Have

  • A willingness to examine and investigate issues.
  • A desire to ensure that equipment is safe.
  • Completing and overseeing the production and presentation of reports.
  • Ability to effectively manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Able to work under pressure and maintain efficiency.
  • Credible presentation skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience of safety engineering within a vehicle and/or defence environment.
  • Engineering degree.
  • ONC/HNC or equivalent experience in Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of MOD Safety & Environmental Management Systems.
  • Understanding of MoD safety management activities and processes.
  • A good working knowledge of hazard management tools.
  • Experience of carrying out safety analyses.
  • Knowledge or experience of Functional Safety (IEC 61508) and Accident analysis.
  • Supplier safety management.
