Rhea Space Activity (RSA) is a leading innovator in advanced technologies that address global security challenges, specialising in secure communication and reliable navigation solutions for complex environments. Headquartered in Washington, DC, RSA also operates a subsidiary in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, where this Optical Systems Engineer role will be based.
This is a full-time, on-site (lab-based) role located in Edinburgh for an Optical Systems Engineer. The engineer will be responsible for leading the design, build, and characterisation of free‑space and fibre‑coupled optical systems, and lens assemblies for a range of communication and sensing applications. The Optical Systems Engineer will model optical assemblies in Zemax, align laboratory testbeds, implement beam steering/shaping, and couple free‑space beams into fibre using telescope arrangements and fast steering mirrors.
Salary Competitive, depending on experience and qualifications.
Key responsibilities
- Model complex optical systems in Zemax and translate designs into lab builds.
- Align free‑space optics, including lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, and telescopes; establish beam diagnostics and alignment procedures.
- Implement beam steering with fast steering mirrors (FSMs) and gimbals; tune control parameters for stability and pointing accuracy.
- Shape beams using lens systems to achieve specified mode quality/waist; perform tolerance and sensitivity analyses.
- Couple free‑space beams into optical fibre using telescope arrangements; optimise coupling efficiency and stability.
- Capture and analyse experimental data; document setups, alignment steps, and results to a reproducible standard.
- Develop advanced spatial and spectral filtering for free-space optical communication systems and sensors.
- Follow laser safety and lab EHS procedures; maintain a tidy, well‑instrumented lab environment.
Essential
- Laboratory optics experience with hands‑on alignment and handling of optical components.
- Experience modelling optical systems using Zemax.
- Python/Matlab/LabVIEW experience for modelling, data analysis, and laboratory equipment control.
- Beam steering expertise using FSMs and gimbals.
- Beam shaping expertise using lens systems.
- Optical fibre coupling of free‑space beams using a telescope arrangement.
- Applicants must have (or be able to obtain) the right to work in the UK.
Desired
- Experience with Sagnac interferometers.
- Experience with Michelson interferometers.
- Experience with polarisation state control (e.g., waveplates, polarisers, PBS).
- Automation and data capture using Python or MATLAB; familiarity with LabVIEW or instrument control (GPIB/USB).
- Experience with beam profilers, power meters, and CCD/CMOS cameras for diagnostics.
Education & experience
- MSci/MEng/PhD in Physics, Photonics/Optical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience in industry.
- Evidence of practical project work with clear documentation and results.
