Salary/Rate: £40k – 50k per year + medical, pension
Sheffield Office-Based (with Occasional Site Visits)
We are looking for an initiative-taking and skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our clients Design team. This is a fully office-based role, with opportunities to visit project sites and collaborate closely with the Project Lead and Workshop Team, ensuring designs are executed in the most practical and efficient way possible.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies, from concept through to production and installation (cradle to grave) and implement feedback in next designs
- Perform detailed hand calculations (e.g. stress analysis, bolted/welded joint assessments, load calculations).
- Produce and review detailed 3D models and technical drawings using CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD 3D preferred; Inventor experience also considered).
- Collaborate with the fabrication and workshop teams to ensure manufacturability and adherence to welding/fabrication standards.
- Apply relevant British and international design standards and calculations
- Provide technical support to project managers, fabricators, and site teams.
- Ensure compliance with all internal quality, safety, and environmental standards.
Skills & Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
- Proven experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably within infrastructure or heavy fabrication.
- Strong competence in manual hand calculations for structural and mechanical elements.
- In-depth understanding of welding principles and fabrication processes.
- Proficient in CAD software – SolidWorks highly preferred, but AutoCAD 3D or Inventor also considered.
- Familiarity with industry standards (BS, EN, ISO).
- Excellent critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and communication abilities.
- Strong team player who enjoys collaborating across disciplines.
- Experience in infrastructure or construction engineering.
- Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation).
