A leading provider of advanced laboratory automation solutions is seeking a Field Service Engineer to support cutting-edge systems used across biotech, pharma, and research environments. This is a highly technical, customer-facing role focused on installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex robotic and automated lab platforms. You'll play a critical role in ensuring high system uptime, delivering exceptional customer support, and contributing to the success of innovative scientific workflows in areas such as drug discovery and genomics.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, and calibrate automated laboratory and robotic systems at customer sites
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair hardware across a range of advanced automation platforms
- Respond to customer issues, providing effective triage and technical resolution
- Work closely with software/automation specialists to deliver full system support
- Perform system upgrades, relocations, and preventative maintenance activities
- Deliver user training on equipment operation and basic software functionality
- Maintain accurate service documentation, reports, and case records
- Build strong customer relationships through proactive communication and support
- Manage spare parts inventory and ensure readiness for field service activities
- Contribute to continuous improvement through knowledge sharing and documentation
Senior-Level Responsibilities
- Mentor and support junior engineers in the field
- Lead complex troubleshooting and escalations
- Deliver technical training sessions and contribute to training development
- Engage in customer review meetings and long-term account support
- Support cross-functional projects and continuous improvement initiatives
Skills & Experience Required
- Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline
- Proven experience in a field service or customer-facing engineering role
- Background in laboratory automation, robotics, or scientific instrumentation highly desirable
- Strong fault-finding skills across mechanical, electrical, and system-level issues
- Knowledge of communications protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, RS232) advantageous
- Excellent communication skills—able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Highly organised, self-motivated, and capable of working independently in the field
- Strong customer service mindset with a professional approach
Additional Desirable Experience
- Exposure to HVAC, cooling systems, or environmental controls
- Familiarity with automation software, firmware, or programming concepts
- Experience supporting complex integrated systems
