We are seeking an ambitious and commercially minded Associate Transport Planner to join our growing Development Planning team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport planning professional looking to take the next step in their career, combining technical excellence with client relationship management, business development and team leadership. The successful candidate shall possess extensive experience in UK development planning and demonstrate a strong understanding of the planning system, transport policy and highway design principles.
The role requires an individual capable of leading the preparation and delivery of a broad range of transport planning commissions, supporting the continued growth of the business and mentoring junior members of the team.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Transport Planner shall lead and manage transport planning commissions from inception through to completion, ensuring the delivery of high-quality technical advice and commercially successful outcomes. The role includes the preparation and review of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Technical Notes, Construction Logistics Plans, Delivery and Servicing Plans and other supporting transport documentation for planning applications across a wide range of development sectors.
The successful candidate shall undertake and oversee transport modelling and junction capacity assessments using Junctions software (ARCADY, PICADY and OSCADY) and LINSIG, providing technically robust advice to clients and design teams. Working closely with architects, planning consultants and highway engineers, the Associate Transport Planner shall contribute to the development of access strategies, site masterplans and highway mitigation proposals, whilst representing clients during discussions and negotiations with Local Highway Authorities, National Highways and Local Planning Authorities.
The role includes supporting the preparation of fee proposals, identifying new business opportunities and developing an emerging portfolio of clients. The successful candidate shall actively contribute to work winning activities, networking events and the continued growth of the business. An important aspect of the role involves mentoring and supporting graduate and junior transport planners, providing technical guidance, reviewing work and assisting with their professional development.
Person SpecificationThe successful candidate should possess:
- Extensive experience within UK transport planning, with a particular focus on development planning.
- A strong understanding of the UK planning system, national transport policy and highway design guidance.
- Proven experience preparing and reviewing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements and associated planning documents.
- Advanced capability in Junctions software (ARCADY, PICADY and OSCADY) and LINSIG, with the ability to interpret results and provide practical design advice.
- Experience of liaising directly with Local Highway Authorities, Local Planning Authorities and multidisciplinary design teams.
- An emerging client base together with the ability to generate repeat business and contribute to business development activities.
- Excellent report writing, communication and presentation skills.
- Experience managing projects, programmes and budgets.
- The ability to mentor and develop junior members of staff.
- A proactive and collaborative approach with strong commercial awareness.
A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography or a related discipline is essential. Working towards the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) accreditation is essential, with a clear commitment to achieving professional registration. Membership of a relevant professional institution, such as the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), Transport Planning Society (TPS) or Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), would be advantageous.
