Full-time Permanent Specialist

Department: Technical

Reports to: Group Technical Director

Hours: Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:30 with planned out of hours and on-call.

Role Overview

The Linux & Applications Specialist will support, maintain, automate, and improve critical ISP, hosting, and service provider platforms across a fast-paced telecommunications and internet service provider environment. The role focuses on Linux systems administration, ISP platform support, hosting infrastructure, automation, monitoring, and platform reliability across cloud and on-premise environments. The successful candidate will support core operational systems that underpin broadband, voice, hosting, monitoring, authentication, and customer service delivery platforms.

Working closely with Network Engineering, Infrastructure, Cyber Security, and Service Operations teams, the role will help ensure secure, stable, and scalable service delivery across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and support Linux server infrastructure across ISP and hosting platforms
  • Support operational applications including monitoring, authentication, DNS, VoIP, hosting, and management systems
  • Maintain and improve platform stability, performance, resilience, and security
  • Perform patching, upgrades, vulnerability remediation, and system hardening
  • Support automation and scripting for provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, and operational tasks
  • Maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes
  • Support virtualisation and hosted infrastructure environments
  • Assist with incident response, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem management
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and operational standards
  • Support infrastructure modernisation, standardisation, and automation initiatives
  • Participate in out-of-hours maintenance and operational escalation where required

Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting production hosting or ISP infrastructure environments
  • Knowledge of DNS, SMTP / Mail Platforms, Backup and monitoring systems
  • Experience with Bash and/or Python scripting
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals including IP networking & Routing, Firewalls, VPNs, VRFs / VLANs
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of platform security, patch management, and system hardening
  • Experience within an ISP, telecoms, MSP, or hosting provider
  • Experience supporting high-availability service environments
  • Building DevOps systems to support infrastructure as code
  • Knowledge of Proxmox/ VMware / Docker, VoIP platforms, Monitoring platforms, Git and automation tooling
