Overview

As one of the fastest-growing and highest-rated commercial energy suppliers in the UK, we are looking to recruit a QA Engineer to join our IT team, based at our Guiseley Head office in Leeds.

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in energy‑sector applications, API validation, and the Microsoft technology stack. You will work closely with our engineering and product teams to support the testing of our energy‑focused digital solutions, ensuring they are accurate, compliant, secure, and reliable.

Responsibilities

  • Test strategy creation — Define test scope, approach, environments, and risk‑based priorities for complex data and analytics projects.
  • Effort estimation — Provide accurate test estimates and resource planning for sprints and releases.

Data Validation & Quality Assurance

  • Data accuracy checks — Validate correctness, completeness, and consistency of data across systems.
  • Business rule verification — Ensure transformations and calculations align with business logic.

Functional & Integration Testing

  • End‑to‑end workflow testing — Validate full data flow across multiple systems, APIs, and pipelines.
  • Integration point validation — Test interfaces between ETL, databases, reporting tools, and downstream apps.

Defect Management & Quality Governance

  • Defect lifecycle ownership — Log, track, prioritise, and drive defects to closure with clear evidence.
  • Quality gate enforcement — Ensure releases meet defined acceptance criteria before deployment.

Automation & Tooling

  • Automation framework enhancement — Improve or extend automation for regression, API, or data validation.
  • Tool evaluation — Assess new testing tools for efficiency, coverage, and integration.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Requirement clarification — Work with BAs, architects, and SMEs to refine requirements and identify gaps.
  • Cross‑team coordination — Collaborate with developers, data engineers, and product owners to ensure alignment.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Test artefact creation — Produce test plans, test cases, traceability matrices, and execution reports.
  • Risk reporting — Highlight risks, dependencies, and quality concerns to leadership.
  • Process optimisation — Recommend improvements to QA processes, and test coverage.
  • Knowledge sharing — Mentor junior testers and contribute to testing standards and guidelines.

Technical Skills

  • Test automation proficiency — Skilled in designing, executing, and maintaining automated test suites across API, UI, and data layers.
  • Strong SQL and data testing — Able to write queries to validate data integrity, transformations, and backend logic.

Analytical Skills

  • Defect root‑cause analysis — Capable of identifying underlying issues in data, logic, or system behaviour through structured investigation.
  • Risk‑based testing — Skilled at analysing requirements and prioritising test coverage based on business and technical risk.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Clear defect reporting — Able to document issues with clarity, reproducibility, and strong technical detail for developers.
  • Cross‑functional teamwork — Works closely with BAs, developers, and product owners to ensure shared understanding of requirements and quality goals.

Project Management

  • Test planning & ownership — Experienced in creating test plans, estimating effort, and managing QA deliverables within sprint timelines.
  • Agile QA practices — Actively participates in Agile ceremonies and supports continuous integration and delivery workflows.

    Educational Background

    • Relevant academic foundation — Degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field supporting strong analytical and technical testing skills.
    • Professional QA certifications — ISTQB or similar certifications that demonstrate structured testing knowledge.

    Professional Experience

    • Hands‑on QA experience — 8+ years testing complex systems, including APIs, databases, integrations, and end‑to‑end workflows.
    • Domain knowledge advantage — Experience in UK Energy Supply or Utilities testing is beneficial for understanding industry‑specific data flows and regulations.

    Good to Have

    • Load and stress testing — Assess system behaviour under peak data volumes and concurrent usage.
    • Bottleneck identification — Analyse slow queries, long refresh times, and system latency.
    • Strong energy domain knowledge across UK gas and electricity markets, including industry processes, metering, billing, and regulatory requirements.
