We\’re looking for a highly experienced structural design engineer to act as Technical Lead to drive excellence across design and engineering delivery, ensuring robust, cost-effective, and compliant solutions from concept to completion.
About the Role
As the Technical Lead ( lead structural engineer ) , you\’ll play a central role in managing and integrating structural design, engineering, and commercial functions across multiple high-profile building and infrastructure projects. From setting the technical strategy to mentoring multidisciplinary design teams and liaising with clients, you\’ll ensure every design output meets quality, regulatory, and commercial standards.
You\’ll work closely with quantity surveyors, estimators, and project managers—bringing together technical precision and commercial pragmatism to deliver competitive, compliant, and high-quality outcomes.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading the technical structural engineering design strategy for multiple projects, ensuring alignment with client goals and business objectives.
- Oversee design outputs, calculations, and technical documentation, ensuring engineering integrity and compliance.
- Collaborate with commercial teams to ensure all designs are cost-effective, value-engineered, and aligned with budgets and contracts.
- Manage design programmes, allocate resources, and meet critical project milestones.
- Mentor and develop engineers, designers, and technicians—fostering an environment of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Represent the business with clients, architects, consultants, and industry forums as a trusted technical authority.
- Promote the use of digital engineering tools (BIM, etc.) to improve quality, efficiency, and delivery.
- Proactively manage technical risk and ensure full compliance with British Standards, Eurocodes, and all relevant regulations.
experience and skills required
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree-qualified in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering (or related discipline)
- Chartered status (CEng, MIStructE, or equivalent) highly desirable
- Ideally 10+ years of experience in technical structural design with strong knowledge of large steel design and temporary works design
- leadership experience in the construction or infrastructure sector
- Proven success in integrating design with commercial considerations
- Strong leadership and communication skills
