A Brief Overview

This is a key role within both the EMEA region and the Global Valuation Team. The VP & Actuary, EMEA Valuation leads and is accountable for the valuation reporting process for Financial Solutions reinsurance business under the applicable reporting bases, primarily US GAAP (LDTI), Solvency II, as well as US Statutory and other bases as necessary. They engage with internal teams and senior management with clear communication and a strong ability to influence and partner. As leader, they create and implement a vision for a high performing team, demonstrating accountability, a strong governance and control focus and a drive for process efficiency. The role is also accountable for and contributes to activities supporting corporate planning, risk reporting, the enhancement of financial models and infrastructure, assumption review, economic capital, value measures, and development of processes used by the valuation team. It is expected that the successful candidate has experience leading key pieces of work, engaging with multiple stakeholders and partner teams.

What you will do

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end valuation reporting process for the Financial Solutions business in the region, covering US GAAP, Solvency II, US Statutory plus other bases as required.
  • Leads the development and streamlining of valuation models, processes and analytics, providing actuarial and business judgement to ensure accurate delivery.
  • Liaises with Finance, stakeholder teams and senior management in understanding and communicating results.
  • Liaises with Business Development and Pricing teams in understanding transaction pipelines and ensuring that valuation infrastructure can support ongoing growth opportunities.
  • Reviews and approves the implementation of actuarial models and data feeds into the financial reporting platform.
  • Leads the assessment of the performance of valuation model results against actual experience, advising on and implementing changes to models, processes and assumptions as required.
  • Leads the proposal of assumption changes for relevant business lines, working with partner teams.
  • Serves as a liaison with other lines of business and company functions to promote improvement in valuation approaches; leads and influences on practices where appropriate.
  • Enhances and supports governance activities and the control infrastructure. Accountable for maintaining a strong control environment and reporting accordingly (including liaising with Audit, Risk and other teams).
  • Develops and maintains relevant experience monitoring analytics, reviews actuarial assumptions, and makes recommendations on assumption updates as needed.
  • Deliver business plan, internal capital, risk reporting and other requirements.
  • Proactively engages with partner teams.
  • Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development.
  • Support other business lines as required.

Qualifications

  • Actuarial experience in life insurance/reinsurance including 3-5 years managerial and leadership experience.
  • Fellow of Institute of Actuaries or equivalent.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of reserving techniques across different bases.
  • Familiarity with US GAAP and Solvency II financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with longevity insurance and reinsurance products.
  • Strong ability to understand quantitative output, using understanding of the financial models and validating against business experience.
  • Advanced understanding of insurance financial metrics and analysis techniques.
  • Highly advanced PC and technical skills, including database applications (Access, Oracle, SQL, or equivalent technology), spreadsheets, statistical programs, and actuarial software (MoSes, TAS, AXIS, Prophet, or equivalent).
  • Advanced communication skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively with different disciplines, including pricing, investments, accounting, systems, and administration.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to identify and help drive process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to balance leading, managing and individually participating.
