We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join a high-profile Life Sciences contract in Darlington. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer looking to work within a technically challenging, highly regulated environment where reliability, compliance and operational excellence are critical.
The successful candidate will become part of an established engineering team, delivering planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across a modern facility supporting cutting-edge scientific and research activities.
The Role
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant operation of mechanical and building services systems across the site. Working closely with colleagues, contractors and client stakeholders, you will play a key role in maintaining business-critical infrastructure and delivering exceptional service standards.
This position is ideally suited to an engineer with strong fault-finding abilities, excellent communication skills and experience within commercial, healthcare, life sciences, manufacturing, data centre or other critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs on mechanical and building services systems.
- Ensure the efficient operation, maintenance and repair of M&E plant and equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and manage tasks through the CAFM system.
- Support statutory compliance and ensure all work is completed in line with health and safety requirements.
- Supervise and coordinate specialist subcontractors when required.
- Prepare and review risk assessments and method statements.
- Assist with quotations for remedial works and minor projects.
- Support the delivery of contractual KPIs and service level agreements.
- Participate in audits, toolbox talks and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with client representatives and stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- City & Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline.
- Experience working within facilities management, commercial buildings, life sciences, healthcare, manufacturing, data centres or other critical environments.
- Strong understanding of mechanical plant and building services systems.
- Experience carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance.
- Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and statutory compliance requirements.
- Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
Desirable
- IOSH Managing Safely qualification.
- Experience using CAFM systems.
- Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Experience working with HVAC systems, water treatment, generators, UPS systems, lifts and associated infrastructure.
