Shift Mechanical Engineer Location: Birmingham Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 per annum + shift allowance Hours: 40.25 hours per week Shift Pattern: 2 Days, 2 Nights, 4 Off Shifts: 7am-7pm / 7pm-7am Environment: Healthcare The Role We are currently recruiting for an experienced Shift Mechanical Engineer to join a busy healthcare environment in Birmingham. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting a wide range of critical mechanical and building services systems. You will undertake planned and reactive maintenance, fault finding and repairs, helping to ensure essential services remain safe, reliable and operational around the clock. This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically qualified engineer who enjoys working in a technically demanding environment and is looking to develop their experience across complex healthcare building services. Key Responsibilities - Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) across a range of mechanical building services. - Undertake reactive maintenance, diagnostics, fault finding and repairs on complex mechanical systems. - Work on systems including: - Ventilation and air handling systems - Pumps and compressors - Boilers and heating systems - Medical gas systems - Domestic hot and cold-water systems - Other mechanical building services - Respond to BMS alerts and telephone calls, particularly during night shifts, acting as an initial point of contact for engineering issues. - Assess faults and operational issues, taking appropriate action and allocating tasks where required. - Ensure maintenance activities and reactive works are accurately documented. - Provide clear handovers to the Helpdesk and engineering teams to maintain service continuity. - Work in accordance with relevant legislation, healthcare standards, operational procedures and safe systems of work. - Develop Competent Person status across specialist systems through appropriate training and instruction. - Support the wider engineering team and contribute to a proactive approach to maintenance and service improvement. About You We are looking for a mechanically qualified engineer with previous experience working within a maintenance or building services environment. You will ideally have: - City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 in a relevant mechanical engineering discipline. - A recognised engineering apprenticeship or equivalent qualification. - Previous experience in a mechanical maintenance role. - Good knowledge of complex mechanical building services. - Experience with ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers and heating systems. - Knowledge of domestic hot and cold-water systems. - Ideally, some experience of medical gas systems or other specialist healthcare engineering services. - Good diagnostic and fault-finding skills. - The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a wider engineering team. - A strong understanding of health and safety and compliance requirements. - Good communication and record-keeping skills. - Previous healthcare or hospital engineering experience would be highly advantageous, although engineers from other complex environments will also be considered.
