This full-time postdoctoral research opportunity invites a motivated early-career scientist to join the University of Exeter’s Centre for Metamaterials Research & Innovation within the Environment, Science and Economy division. The position is an integral part of the UK Metamaterials Network and the EPSRC-backed MetaHUB programme, one of the largest national investments in advanced metamaterials research.

The successful researcher will investigate the dynamic processes in magnetic three-dimensional nanoscale metamaterials, exploring how spin wave and vortex dynamics in engineered curvilinear geometries give rise to collective modes relevant for next-generation computational devices. Work is embedded in a vibrant interdisciplinary context that spans physics, engineering, materials science and applied research, with access to world-class experimental infrastructure and collaboration across UK institutions.

Research under this role focuses on advancing fundamental understanding of magnetic metamaterials at the nanoscale and developing experimental methodologies that inform the design of high-performance materials for applications such as low-energy data storage and neuromorphic computing. The postholder will use advanced measurement techniques including wide-field Kerr microscopy (WFKM), vector network analyser ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR), time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM), and related time-resolved optical and magnetic characterisation tools housed at Exeter’s experimental facilities.

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in physics, materials science, engineering or a closely related discipline. Prior experience in areas such as time-resolved optical measurements, near-field optical sensing, magnetic and spintronic materials research, or comparable experimental techniques is desirable, alongside strong analytical capabilities and the ability to work effectively within collaborative research networks. Enthusiasm for advancing novel experimental approaches and contributing to multidisciplinary scientific enquiry is essential.

The role is offered on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the appointment available from April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post includes opportunities to contribute to the development of experimental capabilities, engage with national research hub activities, and co-author high-impact scientific outputs.

Salary for this position is on the University of Exeter research pay scale at Grade F, typically around £43,482 per annum, with associated benefits including generous holiday allowances, pension provision and support for relocation where applicable.
