The University of Sussex invites applications for a Post‑Doctoral Research Fellow to contribute to forefront cosmological research focused on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and its analysis using data and theoretical frameworks from the Simons Observatory (SO). This fixed‑term position enables an early‑career researcher to work collaboratively within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, contributing both to the University’s research portfolio and to the broader international SO collaboration.

The role encompasses developing and applying advanced analytical and numerical techniques relevant to CMB science, with particular emphasis on components of the Simons Observatory’s science goals, including CMB lensing, power spectra, likelihoods, parameter estimation, and related theoretical or data‑driven investigations. You will work with a small Sussex‑based team under local leadership and integrate with researchers across the global SO collaboration. Applicants are also encouraged to pursue their own innovative research directions within the project’s scope.

Applicants should hold (or expect to have by the start date) a doctoral degree (PhD) in Physics, Astronomy, Cosmology, or a closely related field. Candidates should demonstrate substantive knowledge of CMB science and data analysis, ideally with experience in aspects of CMB lensing, power spectrum estimation, or other areas directly relevant to the Simons Observatory’s research programme. Previous involvement with SO or similar large‑scale cosmological experiments is advantageous.

  • Strong competency in CMB data analysis, including numerical, statistical, or theoretical approaches relevant to SO science.
  • Demonstrated capacity for independent research and the ability to contribute collaboratively to an international research collaboration.
  • Excellent computing skills, including familiarity with scientific programming languages and libraries common in cosmology research (e.g., Python, C/C++, HPC environments), expected as part of advanced CMB analysis work.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills appropriate for scholarship, collaboration and dissemination of research findings.
