Design Engineer

A vacancy has arisen for a Design Engineer based in our Harwich office.

The role is responsible for developing and delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective mechanical engineering designs to support site operations, maintenance activities, capital projects and inspection programes. Using CAD software, the postholder will produce accurate 3D models, engineering drawings and technical documentation, undertake design analysis and simulations, and select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods.

Working closely with internal stakeholders, technicians, suppliers and subject‑matter experts, they will translate operational requirements into practical engineering solutions and resolve technical issues.

The postholder will also coordinate plant inspections and surveys, maintain accurate engineering records, and support the delivery of maintenance and capital expenditure projects.

They will ensure all work complies with relevant engineering standards, regulatory requirements and Management of Change processes, including CDM, HAZOP, inspection, testing and handover requirements. A strong commitment to health and safety, compliance, plant reliability and continuous improvement is essential, with the role contributing to improved systems and procedures through recognised engineering, Lean, Total Productive Management and quality management principles.

Responsibilities

• Produce 3D CAD models, engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Conduct engineering design, analysis and simulations to confirm performance, reliability and suitability.
• Select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods, including emerging technologies.
• Apply relevant engineering standards and regulations, including pressure equipment, vessels, lifting equipment, tanks and pipework.
• Coordinate plant inspections and surveys, analyse findings and maintain accurate engineering records.Manage and supervise capital expenditure, maintenance and site‑based projects.
• Participate in design reviews and ensure agreed actions are completed.
• Work with suppliers, technicians and subject‑matter experts to define requirements, resolve issues and deliver equipment into service.
• Follow Management of Change requirements, including CDM, HAZOP, inspection, testing and handover processes.
• Support engineering procurement, including purchase requisitions, expediting and invoice processing.
• Contribute to continuous improvement using Lean, Total Productive Management and quality management principles.
• Comply with company health and safety requirements and ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.

Qualifications and Experience

• HNC/D qualification / or Degree level in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
• A member of a professional institute or working towards it
• Experience of working within or understanding of health & safety standards and regulations.
• Previous experience of complex design projects with good problem resolution skills
• Detailed knowledge of 3D CAD, data management and revision control, with the ability to perform design calculations and analysis using engineering software.
• Excellent communicator with the ability to form solid working relationships with key stakeholders. Ability to communicate effectively with engineering and operational staff
• Adaptable to change, with ability to deliver against business priorities
• Strong knowledge of mechanical principles, materials & manufacturing processes.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills.
• Enthusiasm to train and learn new skills.
