Meet Liz Roper, Software Developer on the MoveSpring Team

In 2020, Liz Roper decided to change careers completely, leaving her accountancy job in Chicago to learn software engineering. Now based in London, MoveSpring became a Reward Gateway company, and we caught up with her to discover how the journey has been.

Overview

Reward Gateway acquired MoveSpring — the leading fitness tracker platform for corporate wellness. We wanted to introduce you to the people who\’ve helped shape, create, and power MoveSpring\’s growth, and today we introduce Liz Roper, a member of our Engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • I’m primarily a backend integrations developer, so I’m usually working on the things that go on behind the scenes.
  • Recently I’ve worked on features that allow our customers to issue points and create challenges for their employees.
  • I’ve helped implement a service that lets us access better audit records of events that happen on the platform.

Team culture and background

The dev team has historically hired career switchers or bootcamp grads — people that have taken non-traditional routes. I was in accounting for eight years before this and found it less fulfilling, so I went to a development bootcamp and met MoveSpring. Everyone on the team works on everything, nobody is pigeonholed by their role, and coming from non-traditional backgrounds brings new perspectives and a supportive learning environment.

Acquisition and transition

MoveSpring is a small team (about 22 people) and agile. When Reward Gateway acquired MoveSpring, we were somewhat nervous about culture and autonomy, but the integration has aligned priorities. RG brings expertise in rewards and recognition, while MoveSpring contributes its wellness platform to a larger RG ecosystem.

To move from a core team of twenty to hundreds, we stay autonomous in our work, continuing to make MoveSpring a great product, and realign our goals to fit into the RG ecosystem. Being in London has allowed Liz to visit the RG office and maintain in-person connections.

Transparency from leadership has been appreciated; executives like Doug are open and transparent with the company, which has eased concerns about the transition to a larger company (and a new country).

  • Pluralsight is a big one — we used it at MoveSpring. Since merging, I’ve loved the book benefit for Audible. It’s a unique offering that shows RG wants employees to grow outside of work and be well-rounded.

  • Being a team player is the biggest quality; there are no fixed roles—X must work only on iOS, Y is only a Web Developer. Everyone helps where they can and has each other\’s back. Enthusiasm and a desire to learn are important—the tech world is always changing, and we’re always looking to adopt new libraries and software.
