A major UK broadcaster seeks a Paralegal to join the BALA team in London to support the commissioning and relicensing of a broad range of content across the entire portfolio of channels and services. The role involves working closely with team members, internal stakeholders and third-party suppliers (both qualifying and non-qualifying independent production companies) spanning all genres including scripted, live, sports, reality and documentary programming. The Paralegal also provides key BALA support on important projects and product launches.

Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Reviewing standard and non-standard production agreements and licenses to establish rights availability for exploitation on linear and VOD/FAST services.
  • Assisting with the drafting and negotiation (with supervision and guidance where required) of various legal agreements.
  • Managing workflows, databases and rights/project/content management systems to enable the tracking of rights and negotiations. This will include managing the accurate and timely recording of rights on What’s On (WON rights management system) and dealing with system queries as required.
  • Regularly liaising with colleagues within the BALA team and the wider business providing updates and taking part in meetings as required.
  • Working closely with colleagues in the BALA team (including BALA Executives, Trainees and the Team Coordinator) to ensure effective communication, information sharing and task allocation as required.
  • Concluding intercompany agreements based on agreed templates.
  • Providing general legal and administrative support for senior members of the BALA team including drafting, rights audits, research etc.
  • Contributing to team meetings, initiatives and best practice workflows (including reviewing and improving contract templates and processes) as required.

Required skills:

  • Educated to degree level or above.
  • Appropriate legal training or experience (in-house and/or in private practice).
  • Familiarity with media/entertainment and/or intellectual property law preferred.
  • Developed drafting skills – an ability to produce appropriate working drafts.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills – an ability to interact with people at all levels inside and outside the organisation and to be comfortable in a team environment.
  • Time management skills – an ability to prioritise and manage workloads.
  • Good attention to detail – an ability to produce error free work under supervision.
  • A positive and constructive attitude.
