Salary: UGX. 510,000

Length of contract: 6 Months

Reports to: Communications Officer

Expected travel: Regular domestic travels will be made within the Karamoja region and within other parts of the country.

About the role

The Communications Intern will be responsible for assigned communications roles, including supporting the execution of the organization’s communications strategy and social media strategy. You will liaise with the Communications Officer to provide support to the organization's thematic functions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Social Media handling and Management (50%): Work together with the Communications Officer to manage the Youth Inclusion in Governance and Decision Making (YIGA) project’s social media platforms. Work with relevant teams and project leads to implement other channel-specific media campaigns. Perform any other assigned responsibilities as it relates to the Communications hub and implementation of the Hub’s Communications Strategy.
  • Content Development (40%): Capture compelling photos from the field to bring stories and activities to life. Create and edit engaging video content for external audiences. Identify and tell powerful stories of change (generate, write, and design content that highlights the impact of the YIGA project). Design creative branding and IEC materials that align with organizational identity. Support boosting and promoting content across social media platforms to grow reach, engagement, and online presence.
  • Community Engagement and Mobilization (5%): Strong interpersonal, collaboration and relationship management skills.
  • Other duties as required (5%): Occasionally, working on weekends and holidays, for which time off in lieu can be taken.

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • A relevant diploma or a degree program (Communications, Journalism, graphics design or any relevant field).
  • Candidates should be residents and natives of Moroto, Karamoja.
  • Fluency in Ngakarimojong language is required.
  • Willing to regularly travel to the field.
  • Content production: video, graphics design and photography experience.
  • Editing skills using the Adobe Suite and Canva.
  • Knowledge of social media management.
  • Ability to work independently, manage tasks efficiently, and meet deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Good computer skills, especially in the use of publishing tools.
  • Creative and takes initiative.
  • Able to work effectively in a diverse team environment.
  • Willing to work additional hours at crucial times.
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Event planning skills.
