Job summary
Applications are invited for two full-time Consultant positions in Paediatric Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD).
The successful candidates will join the established Paediatric IMD team at the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine, St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, one of the UK's leading centres for the diagnosis and management of inherited metabolic disorders.
The posts form part of a well-established regional network, and the successful applicants will contribute to the delivery of specialist IMD services across Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford, and Newcastle. The service provides highly specialised care to children and young people throughout the North West of England and the majority of Yorkshire, working collaboratively to ensure equitable access to expert metabolic care across the region.
This is an excellent opportunity for enthusiastic and motivated consultants to work within a multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality tertiary and quaternary paediatric metabolic services, while contributing to service development, clinical leadership, and regional collaboration.
Main duties of the job
The appointees will hold a contract for an average of 10 programmed activities per week in Paediatric Metabolic Disease, including participation in hot-week duties and a 1:7 out-of-hours on-call rota. This includes emergency on-call work, weekend ward rounds, and newborn screening responsibilities. The exact job plan will be agreed at the start of the post.
Core responsibilities include recognising, assessing, and managing the full range of inherited metabolic emergencies; counselling families following a diagnosis of an inherited metabolic disorder (IMD) identified through newborn screening; and explaining IMD inheritance patterns across diverse cultural contexts. The role also involves liaising with hospital and community specialist teams--particularly dietitians, pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory scientists--and working with paediatricians in district general hospitals and specialist centre to coordinate patient care. The postholder will participate in MDTs for general metabolic and lysosomal storage disease patients.
Clinical duties will include both face-to-face and virtual clinics, with our outreach centre. The post also incorporates Hot Week and out-of-hours on-call responsibilities, providing acute metabolic advice across the Northwest region and direct clinical care for inpatients in NICU at Saint Mary's Hospital and paediatric inpatients at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:
Standard DBS
Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS
Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police thats considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists
Includes all of the above, plus checks against the childrens and/or adults barred lists.
Who Needs a DBS Check
Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.
The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.
