About the Company
Our client is an established precision manufacturer operating within the aerospace sector, based in Basildon, Essex. They produce high-tolerance components for the aerospace industry, working to the demanding quality and accuracy standards the sector requires. With a modern machine shop housing a range of 3 to 5-axis machining centres across multiple CNC control platforms, they are now looking for an experienced CNC Miller Setter to join their skilled engineering team on a permanent basis.
The Role
As CNC Miller Setter, you will be responsible for setting up and operating a range of CNC milling machines across 3 and 5-axis configurations. You will work across three control platforms - FANUC, Hurco, and Mazak - machining precision aerospace components to tight tolerances and high surface finish standards. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced machinist who is confident working from engineering drawings, selecting appropriate tooling, and producing high-quality parts with minimal supervision.
Machine Platforms
- FANUC - 3 & 5-Axis Machining Centres
- Setting and operating FANUC-controlled milling machines across 3 and 5-axis configurations.
- Editing and optimising part programs at the control as required.
- Setting tooling, work offsets, and fixture arrangements to achieve required tolerances.
- Hurco - 3 & 5-Axis Machining Centres
- Setting and operating Hurco machining centres using the WinMax conversational control system.
- Producing and proving out new programs for first-off components.
- Adjusting feeds, speeds, and toolpaths to optimise cycle times and surface finish.
- Mazak - 3 & 5-Axis Machining Centres
- Setting and operating Mazak machining centres with Mazatrol control.
- Using conversational Mazatrol programming to develop and edit part programs.
- Machining complex profiles and contoured surfaces to aerospace specification.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate 3 and 5-axis CNC milling machines across FANUC, Hurco, and Mazak control platforms.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and inspection requirements.
- Select and set appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and work-holding arrangements.
- Conduct first-off inspections and in-process checks to verify components meet required tolerances.
- Edit and optimise CNC programs at the machine to improve efficiency and quality.
- Identify and resolve machining issues, adjusting parameters to maintain consistency and quality.
- Maintain accurate production and quality documentation in line with company procedures.
- Ensure machinery is maintained in good working order, reporting faults promptly.
- Work in accordance with all health, safety, and quality requirements relevant to aerospace manufacturing.
- Support the wider production team to meet output targets and delivery schedules.
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience as a CNC Miller Setter in a precision engineering environment.
- Hands-on experience setting and operating 3-axis and/or 5-axis CNC machining centres.
- Working knowledge of at least one of the following controls: FANUC, Hurco (WinMax), or Mazak (Mazatrol) - experience across multiple platforms is highly desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, including GD&T.
- Competent in tooling selection, offset setting, and work-holding setup.
- Experience working to tight tolerances in a quality-controlled manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with aerospace or similarly regulated manufacturing standards is advantageous.
- Self-reliant and capable of working with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality components.
What's on Offer
