As a Senior Small Works Engineer, you will be responsible for the installation, modification, and commissioning of fire safety systems across a variety of sites. Your work will contribute directly to the delivery of high-quality, compliant fire protection solutions for clients.
Working within the Small Works team, you will handle planned minor installation projects, including the upgrade and extension of existing fire alarm systems, as well as smaller standalone installations. You will be expected to ensure all work is completed to the highest standard and in line with relevant regulations and company procedures.
The role is mobile, primarily covering the Midlands, with occasional travel to surrounding areas. Projects will vary in size and complexity, requiring a flexible and proactive approach. A company van, tools, laptop, and phone will be provided to support you in your role. Our client offers a training and development program to help you continue growing your technical skills and progress within the business.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES- Oversee the delivery of small works projects, including fire alarm system installations, modifications, and upgrades, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standard.
- Manage and coordinate small works engineers and subcontractors, ensuring effective resource planning, site supervision, and clear communication.
- Maintain strong client relationships, acting as a main point of contact for project-related communication and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded.
- Ensure full compliance with industry regulations, health & safety standards, and company procedures across all small works activities.
- Monitor project progress and quality, conducting site visits, reviewing documentation, and resolving issues as they arise.
- Support technical development of the team, identifying training needs and mentoring junior engineers to improve capability and performance.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of project documentation, including electronic job sheets, commissioning records, and client sign-off.
- Assist with quoting and project planning, including material procurement, labour allocation, and risk assessments.
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Fire Alarm Systems / Electrical Installation
- BAFE SP203-1 certification (or working towards)
- FIA (Fire Industry Association) Training Certificates, including: Fundamentals of Fire Detection & Alarm Systems, Design, Installation, Maintenance, and Commissioning modules
- 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
- CSCS/ECS Card (relevant discipline)
- IPAF / PASMA / Asbestos Awareness / Working at Height
- Full UK Driving Licence (essential for mobile roles)
- SSSTS / SMSTS (beneficial for those managing sites or leading teams)
- Strong understanding of BS 5839 Part 1 (fire alarm system design, installation, and commissioning)
- Ability to install, modify, and commission a variety of addressable and conventional fire alarm systems (e.g. Gent, Advanced, Kentec, Morley, C-Tec)
- Confident with cable containment (tray, trunking, conduit) and general electrical works related to fire alarm installations
- Proficient in interpreting system designs, drawings, and technical specifications
- Capable of working to deadlines and managing small-scale projects independently or as part of a team
- Clear communicator with client-facing skills
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding abilities
- Competent in completing electronic job sheets, commissioning certificates, and as-fitted drawings
- Awareness of health and safety regulations and site compliance procedures
