Lifting Career Readiness Through Hands-On Auto Mechanics Training With support from a CTE Equipment Mini-Grant from Resource Training & Solutions, Ogilvie Public Schools launched a new auto mechanics program—equipped with a vehicle lift and a professional-grade toolbox. Led by Industrial Technology teacher Tanner Hagglund, this program provides students with skills and confidence to explore automotive careers. Building a Program from the Ground Up The school acquired essential equipment, including a mobile vehicle lift for safe, hands-on learning under vehicles, and a fully stocked tool chest for repairs and diagnostics, funded by the grant. A Practical Learning Experience Students in grades 9–12 now gain real-world experience in vehicle maintenance, from oil changes to diagnostics, working on actual cars, including their own or those of staff. “Students are developing a strong foundation in automotive repair and diagnostics,” said Hagglund. “It’s a great way to explore a high-demand career before pursuing formal training.” Meeting Workforce Needs This program helps meet the rising demand for auto mechanics, preparing students with lifelong skills to maintain their own vehicles and enter the workforce. A Grant with a Lasting Impact Expected to serve 20 students in its first year, the program is already attracting interest across grade levels. Supported by the CTE Mini-Grant, Ogilvie Schools is creating opportunities aligned with local workforce needs and transforming career and technical education.
