Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Grid Engineer to support the development and operation of wind, solar and storage projects. The role is responsible for identifying optimum grid connection solutions, securing agreements, and managing financial liabilities throughout the project life cycle.
Role Responsibilities
- Conduct grid connection feasibility studies for new sites and provide grid input into new site search activities.
- Identify optimum grid connection solutions, considering operational factors such as grid‑use of system charging, loss adjustments, and grid constraints or curtailment.
- Secure grid connection agreements (or modifications) aligned with project strategy and negotiate technical requirements.
- Track grid liabilities, advise on connection‑agreement strategies to manage risk exposure, and prepare executive‑approval memos.
- Manage the IDE process in contestable connection works, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs and interacting with the DNO for design approval.
- Deliver grid compliance (EON, ION, FON) to enable timely energisation and operation.
- Provide technical support during detailed design and construction, ensuring grid‑code compliance.
- Support operating projects through the Support Services team for grid troubleshooting and third‑party adoption.
- Offer peer review and expert advice to project‑team Grid Engineers.
- Lead the implementation of new processes and represent the business in industry forums.
Organisational Context
- Line‑managed by a Project Manager in one of the wind, solar or storage development teams.
- Reports to a New Sites Manager or Development Project Manager during pre‑consent phases, a Project Manager in the post‑consent phase, and a Construction Project Manager during construction.
- Procures specialist services internally or externally for detailed electrical design and grid studies.
- Interfaces with the Electrical Design Engineer and SCADA Engineer during detailed design and construction.
Knowledge & Expertise
- Expert knowledge of power systems up to 33 kV and above in a power‑generation environment.
- Expert knowledge of grid connection requirements and commercial policies.
- Strong understanding of commercial project requirements and priorities.
Skills
- Drive innovative, cost‑effective or timely grid connection solutions and negotiate with external grid companies.
- Commercial awareness of contract compliance, cost control, and relative value of engineering solutions.
- Project planning and management to align grid milestones with wider project delivery.
- Presentation skills to technical and non‑technical audiences (written and verbal).
- Attention to detail during preparation and review of design deliverables.
- Provide empathetic expert support and advice to UK & K project Grid Engineers.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of experience performing at mentor/thought‑leader level in the installation, testing, commissioning and operation of multiple power‑generation systems and other electrical engineering works.
Qualifications
- Degree, HND, or HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related subject.
