Renfrewshire Council are looking to recruit a motivated and experienced Operations/Control Room Operator to assist with the 24-hour, 365-day-a-year operation of the Renfrew Bridge. The bridge is a Cable Stay swing road bridge, spanning the River Clyde. The opening and closing of the bridge is controlled remotely from the Control Room building, situated next to the structure (on the southern side in Renfrew) and is required to open on demand to allow the passage of River Vessels.

The Renfrew Bridge operations team are responsible for ensuring that the bridge is open or closed as required, in accordance with specific operational protocols and key bridge performance metrics. As a Control Room Operative, you will be responsible for undertaking the operation and control of the bridge in line with the specific operations protocols. The main duties of the post are included in more details within the job outline.

The operation of the bridge extends beyond just the opening and closing of the bridge and as an Operative you will be required to undertake these activities in line with specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You will ideally have experience working in operational control room facilities. It is desirable that you are able to demonstrate evidence of experience undertaking remote communications from an operational control facility. You will have experience in following health and safety policies and procedures.

There are no mandatory qualification requirements for the role, however a degree or professional qualification in a relevant subject is desirable. You must possess core skills including:

  • Able and experienced in identification of problems and undertaking of remedial action
  • Logical and able to understand complex operational protocols
  • Ability to identify issues in relation to facilities from a remote location
  • Effective communicator
  • Possess an understanding of health and safety
  • Have a level of computer literacy, being able to understand and interrogate control system information

These aspects should be brought out in any application and will be explored at interview. Training on specific systems will be provided as part of the role, such as VHF radio training, and you will be required to undertake a medical examination, including drug and alcohol test, to confirm your fitness for the role. You must have experience of operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment as well as experience in information management and document control.

The Renfrew Bridge Operator role is full time, working a 38.5-hour week, 4 on 4 off shift pattern (altering between day and night shifts) and will be based permanently at the Bridge Control Room located just off Meadowside Street, Renfrew. If successful, you will be required to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check, the level of check will be determined by the duties of the post.
