Our client Manchester City council is looking for an Approved Mental Health Professional to join their Emergency duty service.

Purpose of the Role

To provide a statutory out-of-hours Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) service, undertaking assessments and interventions under the relevant mental health legislation. The post holder ensures that individuals experiencing mental health crises receive timely, lawful, person-centred, and least restrictive interventions while working collaboratively with partner agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake Mental Health Act assessments in accordance with the relevant legislation, Codes of Practice, and local policies.
  • Exercise independent professional judgment when carrying out AMHP duties.
  • Coordinate Mental Health Act assessments with medical practitioners, police, ambulance services, and other agencies.
  • Assess risk and make decisions regarding detention, alternatives to admission, or community-based interventions.
  • Complete statutory documentation accurately and within required timescales.
  • Arrange hospital admissions where detention is required and coordinate safe conveyance.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency safeguarding responses.
  • Respond to emergency referrals relating to adults, including safeguarding concerns where appropriate.
  • Offer advice and consultation to professionals regarding mental health legislation and crisis management.
  • Maintain accurate case records using electronic recording systems.
  • Participate in the EDT rota, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory duties, organisational policies, and professional standards.
