Our client Coventry City Council is looking for an Approved Mental Health Professional to join their team.

Job Purpose

To undertake statutory duties under the relevant mental health legislation (such as the Mental Health Act 1983 in England and Wales), including coordinating Mental Health Act assessments, making independent decisions about compulsory admission where appropriate, and ensuring that the rights, welfare, and least restrictive options for individuals experiencing mental disorder are upheld.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments under the Mental Health Act and associated legislation.
  • Coordinate Mental Health Act assessments involving medical practitioners and other professionals.
  • Decide whether to make applications for detention under the Mental Health Act, exercising independent professional judgment.
  • Ensure that individuals' human rights and legal safeguards are protected throughout the assessment process.
  • Consider less restrictive alternatives to hospital admission whenever possible.
  • Complete comprehensive risk assessments and formulate risk management plans.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and community services.
  • Liaise with families, carers, advocacy services, police, ambulance services, and other partner agencies.
  • Prepare accurate, timely, and legally compliant reports and documentation.
  • Attend court hearings, tribunals, safeguarding meetings, and case conferences when required.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours AMHP rota where applicable.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mental health legislation, case law, and professional guidance.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and professional training.
