Autism Specialist Tutor | South London & Surrounding Areas

Remedy Tutoring is looking for an experienced, patient and dedicated Autism Specialist Tutor to support children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across South London and the surrounding areas.

We are seeking a tutor who has a strong understanding of autism and experience adapting their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of autistic students. The ideal candidate will be confident providing structured, personalised tuition to students who may experience communication differences, sensory sensitivities, anxiety around transitions or difficulties engaging with traditional educational environments.

We support students with a range of needs and abilities, including those who are working below their expected academic level, have gaps in their education or are currently unable to attend school. We are therefore looking for someone who can create a calm, predictable and supportive learning environment while building positive relationships and helping students progress at their own pace.

The Role

Deliver personalised one-to-one tuition tailored to each student's individual learning needs, interests, abilities and educational targets.

Support students across core subjects, including English, Maths and Science, depending on your qualifications and subject specialisms.

Use visual timetables, visual prompts, structured routines and clear instructions to support understanding and engagement.

Adapt teaching methods to accommodate communication differences, sensory needs and individual learning preferences.

Support students who may be non-speaking or have limited verbal communication, using appropriate strategies such as visual aids, communication books, signs or other established communication systems where required.

Break learning into manageable steps and provide repetition, consistency and additional processing time where appropriate.

Support students who may experience anxiety around transitions, changes in routine or unfamiliar environments.

Develop positive, trusting relationships with students, recognising the importance of patience, predictability and an individualised approach.

Identify gaps in learning and deliver lessons at the student's current working level, rather than solely their chronological age or school year.

Encourage engagement, independence, confidence and the development of functional learning skills.

Work collaboratively with parents, carers, schools and other professionals where appropriate to maintain a consistent approach.

Monitor progress and adapt teaching strategies to support each student's academic and personal development.

Ideally, a minimum of 2 years' teaching or tutoring experience.

Relevant teaching qualifications, such as PGCE or QTS, are desirable.

Proven experience working with autistic children and young people.

A good understanding of autism, including communication differences, sensory sensitivities, individual learning preferences and the importance of predictable routines.

Experience using visual timetables, visual supports and structured teaching approaches.

The ability to adapt lessons for students working below age-related expectations or with additional learning needs.

Experience supporting non-speaking students or those with complex communication needs is highly beneficial.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with a patient, calm and empathetic approach.

The ability to recognise individual needs and adapt expectations without placing unnecessary pressure on the student.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan structured, purposeful sessions.

A full driving licence and access to reliable transport is desirable for roles requiring travel between tuition locations.

Availability & Working Arrangements

We welcome tutors with a range of availability, including those seeking regular weekly tuition or more flexible opportunities.

Tuition usually takes place Monday to Friday, with specific days and times depending on each student's individual requirements and agreed timetable.

Tutors must be comfortable delivering tuition in a variety of settings, including students' homes, libraries and school environments, depending on what is appropriate for the student.

Some placements may involve home tuition for students who are currently unable to access mainstream education. Applicants should therefore be confident adapting their approach to different environments and supporting students who may require additional time, structure and reassurance to engage with learning.

Location

South London and surrounding areas, with opportunities depending on current student requirements and your preferred travel area.
