Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Maths Tutor with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to join our team and work with primary-aged students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the vibrant area of Westminster. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching mathematics and a strong understanding of how to adapt lessons for students with a range of SEN, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. You will be responsible for delivering engaging and tailored lessons that support students in developing their mathematical skills and confidence.

Responsibilities

  • Lesson Planning & Delivery: Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, differentiated mathematics lessons that meet the individual needs of primary-aged students with SEN. Use a variety of teaching resources and strategies to support students with different learning styles and abilities.
  • Assessment & Monitoring Progress: Regularly assess students progress through informal assessments, observations, and feedback. Track students\’ academic development and adjust teaching approaches as needed to ensure continued progress.
  • Differentiation: Adapt lessons to cater for students with a wide range of learning needs, including those with cognitive and behavioural challenges. Use multisensory teaching methods, visual aids, and hands-on activities to make abstract mathematical concepts accessible.
  • Individual Education Plans (IEPs): Collaborate with the SENCO and other staff to develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student. Set clear, achievable goals for students and monitor their progress towards these targets.
  • Classroom Support & Behaviour Management: Support students within the classroom setting, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages participation and independent learning. Manage behaviour with empathy and positive reinforcement, ensuring a safe and respectful classroom environment.
  • Collaboration with Parents and Caregivers: Work closely with parents and carers to provide updates on student progress and discuss strategies for supporting students learning at home. Build positive relationships with families and other professionals involved in the students\’ educational development.
  • Safeguarding and Well-being: Maintain high standards of safeguarding and ensure the well-being of all students in your care. Adhere to school policies and procedures to support students\’ mental and emotional health.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): A recognised teaching qualification with QTS is essential for this role. Applicants must have experience working in primary education.
  • Experience with SEN: Experience teaching students with a variety of SEN, including ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning difficulties, is highly desirable. A good understanding of how to tailor teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs is crucial.
  • Strong Maths Knowledge: A deep understanding of the primary school maths curriculum and the ability to teach key mathematical concepts in a way that is accessible to students with different learning needs.
  • Ability to Differentiate Instruction: Proven ability to differentiate lessons and activities to suit a wide range of abilities, ensuring that all students can engage meaningfully with the content.
  • Patience, Empathy & Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting, positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. You must be patient, empathetic, and adaptable in your approach.
  • DBS Check: An up-to-date Enhanced DBS check is required (or willingness to undergo one if appointed).
  • First Aid (Desirable): A basic understanding of first aid and an ability to support students with health-related needs would be advantageous.
