An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Occupational Health Physician to provide specialist occupational health expertise to a healthcare organisation in Greater London. This is a sessional consultant role providing independent clinical advice and specialist occupational health support to the Occupational Health service. The postholder will contribute to the management of complex occupational health cases, provide specialist oversight of blood-borne virus monitoring and clearance, and support clinical governance and policy development within the service. The role offers the opportunity to contribute expert occupational health input in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Clinical Advisory Responsibilities
    • Provide specialist occupational health medical advice and independent clinical opinion.
    • Undertake complex case reviews and management referrals.
    • Provide expert advice regarding:
      • Fitness for work
      • Workplace adjustments
      • Long-term sickness absence management
      • Equality Act considerations
      • Ill-health retirement assessments where appropriate
    • Deliver clear and defensible written occupational health reports.
    • Participate in case discussions with HR teams and senior management.
    • Provide second opinions on complex or high-risk occupational health cases.
    • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with GDPR and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine standards.
  • Blood Borne Virus (BBV) Monitoring and Clearance
    • Provide specialist oversight for staff with blood-borne viruses, including:
      • Hepatitis B
      • Hepatitis C
      • HIV
    • Advice on fitness for work, role restrictions and workplace adjustments for healthcare workers performing exposure-prone procedures.
    • Ensure monitoring arrangements comply with current national guidance.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding BBV status.
    • Liaise with Infection Prevention and Control teams and treating clinicians where appropriate.
    • Escalate patient safety concerns through appropriate governance procedures.
  • Governance and Professional Responsibilities
    • Provide senior clinical input into Occupational Health governance.
    • Support the review of complex or escalated occupational health cases.
    • Contribute to policy development, service improvement and clinical standards.
    • Participate in relevant governance meetings and service reviews.
    • Maintain professional registration, CPD and revalidation requirements.

Scope of the Role

The role is advisory and sessional in nature. The Consultant will not be responsible for the operational management of the Occupational Health service. Work will be undertaken within the agreed contracted sessions. Availability outside agreed sessions must be arranged in advance.

    • Medical Degree
    • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
    • MFOM accreditation (Faculty of Occupational Medicine) – Essential requirement for the role
  • Clinical Experience
    • Essential
      • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
      • Demonstrable experience in Occupational Health Medicine
      • Ability to provide independent consultant-level occupational health advice
    • Desirable
      • Substantive NHS Occupational Health experience
      • Experience managing complex occupational health cases in healthcare settings
  • Professional Skills
    • Essential
      • Strong clinical judgement and advisory skills
      • Ability to produce clear occupational health reports
      • Excellent communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills
      • Knowledge of occupational health legislation and national guidance
