We are seeking two Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologists to join a well-established and forward-thinking Clinical Neurophysiology department in the East Midlands. The department delivers adult and paediatric neurophysiology services to approximately 4,500 patients annually, covering a broad regional footprint including Nottinghamshire and parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Staffordshire.
The successful appointees will contribute to a full range of neurophysiological investigations and play a key role in the development and supervision of a modern and skilled scientific and practitioner workforce.
Primary Duties of the Job
- Perform and interpret a wide range of adult and paediatric neurophysiological investigations, including: Routine and urgent EEGs (including video telemetry and long-term monitoring) Nerve conduction studies and EMG (including single fibre) Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) Intraoperative spinal monitoring and cerebral function monitoring in ICUs
- Provide specialist input for inpatient referrals and offer outpatient services across various clinic settings.
- Contribute to departmental governance, audit, incident reporting, service evaluation, and quality improvement.
- Actively supervise and support the training of Consultant Clinical Scientists and Clinical Neurophysiology Practitioners.
Role-Specific Responsibilities
- Ensure safe and timely management of neurophysiological cases, with prioritisation of urgent referrals.
- Participate in training, mentoring, and competency sign-off for Clinical Scientists and Trainees, with a dedicated SPA for educational support.
- Maintain comprehensive clinical records and contribute to the smooth functioning of the department.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions as appropriate.
- Undertake clinical duties at multiple sites when needed (travel compensated according to policy).
- Embrace a flexible, collaborative approach to departmental service delivery and rota planning.
Governance, Teaching & Research
- Contribute to clinical governance, including: Clinical audit Mortality & morbidity reviews Risk assessments and quality improvement
- Provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, focusing on the development of scientists and practitioners in neurophysiology.
- Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and appraisal processes in line with GMC requirements.
- Opportunities are available to engage in clinical research, supported by established academic and university partnerships.
Person Specification
Professional Registration
- Full GMC registration
- On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview
Clinical Skills & Experience
- Demonstrable technical skills in neurophysiological investigations
- Competence in EMG, NCS, EEG interpretation, SSEPs, and related techniques
- Ability to supervise and report on a range of cases across adult and paediatric settings
- Experience with paediatric neurophysiology
- Communication and human factors training
Teaching & Training
- Experience teaching junior doctors or scientific staff
- Commitment to developing the neurophysiology practitioner workforce
- Previous experience in consultant-level supervision and sign-off responsibilities
- Participation in clinical audit and service evaluation
- Original publications and research in neurophysiology
