An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine (AAU) to join a progressive and supportive Acute Medicine team in South West England. This role offers the chance to work within a modern Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) alongside a wellâestablished Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, delivering highâquality, patientâcentred care across the emergency pathway. The post is ideal for clinicians who thrive in frontâdoor medicine, early senior decisionâmaking, and service development. The department is focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and patient flow, with strong multidisciplinary collaboration and flexible working arrangements.
Main Duties of the Job
- Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultantâled care for patients in the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU)
- Deliver twiceâdaily ward rounds and MDT board rounds
- Lead early assessment and management of acute medical admissions
- Ensure rapid clinical decisionâmaking and safe patient flow
- Work closely with the Emergency Department for inâreach and early review
- Supervise and develop the SDEC service
- Manage direct referrals from: GPs, Urgent Care, Emergency Department
- Support ambulatory care pathways and admission avoidance
- Contribute to the redesign and expansion of: AAU services, SDEC pathways
- Lead improvements in: Patient flow, Clinical outcomes, Admission avoidance strategies
- Engage in governance, audit, and quality improvement
- Supervise and mentor: Junior doctors, Clinical fellows, Advanced Nurse Practitioners
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education
- Support workforce development within Acute Medicine
Person specification
- Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- Entry on Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Strong experience in Acute and General Internal Medicine
- Ability to lead clinical teams and manage acute presentations
- Evidence of audit and quality improvement involvement
- CCT in Acute Internal Medicine
- Experience running an Acute Medical / Assessment Unit
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
- Experience in service development
- Publications or research involvement
