Do you have experience managing journals in STM publishing? Can you drive content growth and build solid relationships within the academic community?

About our Team

At STM Journals, we collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and reproducibility. In support of our portfolio of 2900+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes, and fostering equitable participation in publishing. This Publisher role is part of the Physics team within Physical Sciences. The team is a dynamic and global team within STM Journals, with offices around the globe including China, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, and the USA. We manage an extensive collection of existing journals and society relationships, launch new journals, acquire new societies, and establish new journal partnerships to ensure annual growth and customer satisfaction. We deliver world-class content by and for researchers across the globe and take a strategic approach to support our various audiences: authors, editors, researchers, societies, and academia.

About the Role

In the Physics team, we are looking for a bright and enthusiastic Publisher with responsibility for overseeing a list of international journals in Surface Science, as well as to drive expansion of our networks, partnerships, and market share, in line with the overall STM Journals strategy and objectives. The journal list primarily consists of proprietary titles, as well as some society-affiliated titles, including both Hybrid and Open Access titles. To excel in this position, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors, and societies. Based on your experience within the publishing industry globally, you can also easily participate in complex industry discussions with high level stakeholders. This role is being hired primarily in the Elsevier Amsterdam office.

Responsibilities

  • Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high-quality manuscripts;
  • Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors;
  • Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations and actively address improvements where required;
  • Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, new launches, article market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds, editorial fees budget, and author and editor satisfaction.
  • You stay up to date with market developments, to identify and map market needs and business opportunities.
  • Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop a portfolio strategy that will deliver on STMJ targets and to ensure your portfolio remains fully competitive.
  • Stay in close contact with editors and editorial boards within journal portfolio, and engage with stakeholders across the research communities, including research institutes, societies, and funding bodies.
  • You work closely with team members and other publishing colleagues to help deliver on collaborative projects and goals;
  • Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation.

What you will bring

  • Academic degree; preferably in Physics;
  • Relevant STM publishing experience, including open access, with a proven track record of setting and realising goals;
  • Excellent networking and communication skills, in English;
  • Adaptive to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and work collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures, in a deadline-oriented environment;
  • Data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new developments;
  • Financial, commercial and strategic awareness, and eye for business development;
  • Results-oriented with a strong can-do attitude;
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
