About our Team

The Lancet Psychiatry, an established monthly print and online hybrid journal, seeks an in-house Editor-in-Chief. The Lancet Psychiatry was launched in June 2014 with the aim “to play a pivotal role in disseminating new findings and fostering debate that enables clinicians and policy makers to improve the lives of people with mental health problems”. The new Editor-in-Chief must be a subject expert who can continue this mission via the publication of high-impact, practice-changing research, review, and provocative comment and opinion in mental health, providing a clear, independent perspective about the clinical advances and cutting-edge research shaping mental health globally.

About the Role

As an in-house Editor-in-Chief, you are a subject expert who will oversee the assessment and publication of original material for our journal. You will take ownership of submissions and oversee rigorous in-depth peer review to ensure we publish high-quality content. You will build global networks with experts in the community, including experts with lived experience of mental illness, to attract and disseminate the highest quality work from the field.

At the Lancet, we are deeply committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. In our pursuit of excellence, we recognise the strength in varied perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the diversity of our editorial team, we encourage applications from individuals who bring unique skills, backgrounds, and perspectives to the role.

  • Writing editorials and other content for the journal as required
  • Helping devise new initiatives for future development of the journal
  • Participate in projects across The Lancet Group and, on occasion, with Elsevier and RELX

Requirements

  • A Medical Degree in a relevant discipline or a PhD in a related subject field with postdoctoral research experience
  • Extensive editorial experience, at Editor or other senior level, with a good understanding of all aspects of the editorial process, journal production, and of running an editorial team
  • Be able to demonstrate thorough knowledge of biological and medical sciences, and broader social issues pertaining to mental health. Ability to maintain a balanced, evidence-driven approach in managing controversial areas of the field
  • The ability to engage, influence, and build relationships with external stakeholders, including medical and research professionals, people with lived experience of mental illness, and a range of internal teams
