We are looking for a Data Architect to help design and evolve the data architecture that powers Elsevier’s next‑generation publishing and peer‑review platforms. You will play a key role in transforming our submissions ecosystem into a modern, data‑centric platform that supports new submission experiences, AI‑enabled workflows, and enterprise‑wide data reuse. Working closely with engineering teams, product leaders, and platform architects, you will define the core data architecture for the submissions domain, including the manuscript‑centric data model, domain boundaries, APIs, and event‑driven data flows. This is an opportunity to shape the data foundations of one of the world’s largest scholarly publishing platforms.
The Submissions Technology group develops and operates systems that manage the complete lifecycle of scholarly manuscripts—from submission and peer review to editorial decision‑making and integration with downstream publishing and production systems. Our platforms support thousands of journals and enable collaboration between authors, reviewers, and editors across the global research community.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the data architecture for the Submissions platform
- Design and maintain the core manuscript and submission domain data models
- Establish domain‑driven data boundaries across platform capabilities
- Define scalable data access patterns and integration strategies
- Design API‑based and event‑driven data flows
- Guide engineering teams in implementing robust, scalable data solutions
- Support the evolution of legacy systems into modern, platform‑based architectures
- Help establish data governance, ownership, and lineage practices
- Enable a data‑centric platform strategy that supports analytics, AI, and enterprise reuse
Requirements
- Strong experience in data architecture and domain modelling
- Experience applying Domain‑Driven Design (DDD) principles
- Expertise in conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling
- Experience designing multi‑tenant data architectures
- Strong SQL and relational database design skills
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, or cloud‑native databases
Data Platforms & Integration
- Experience with data platforms such as Snowflake or data lakes
- Designing ETL / ELT pipelines
- Experience with event‑driven architectures
- API design experience (REST, GraphQL, OpenAPI)
Modern Architecture
- Microservices architecture
