Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics (RI&PE) is a specialist, fast-evolving centre of expertise dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of the scholarly record and maintaining trust in Elsevier's journals. The team works at scale across investigations, journal audits, network audits, triage, and screening, partnering closely with colleagues in publishing, legal, data & analytics, technology, and operations, as well as external vendors where appropriate. Within RI&PE, the Journal Audit & Networks area takes a structured, risk-based approach to identifying and addressing integrity concerns across journal portfolios, with a growing focus on targeted, high-impact audits and strong stakeholder engagement.

This role sits within that collaborative environment and combines sound ethics judgement, clear communication, and confident people leadership to help the organisation move forward at pace while supporting teams through complex and high-pressure work. We are seeking a Manager to lead one of the Journal Audit Teams within the Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics Centre of Expertise (CE&I). This team plays a central role in strengthening research integrity across Elsevier by focusing on two key goals: (1) conducting in-depth audits of journals where significant ethical risks have been identified; and (2) developing scalable mechanisms and tools to monitor ethical risk across the STMJ portfolio.

The Journal Audit Team supports these goals by creating and implementing policies, practices, and tools that help identify, assess and mitigate publishing-ethics concerns. The team works closely with Publishing, Product, Technology and Editors to investigate complex ethics cases, ensure consistent application of standards, and support publishers in identifying and addressing weaknesses in editorial and operational processes that may allow problematic content to be published, as well as ensuring effective, timely post-publication correction.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the Journal Audits team (circa 13 people), providing clear direction, coaching, and support across varying experience levels.
  • Oversee the delivery of journal audit activity at scale, using a structured, risk-based approach to identify and address publishing ethics concerns across portfolios.
  • Handle complex and borderline ethics cases with confidence and sound judgement, without the need for close supervision.
  • Drive multiple audit projects in parallel, maintaining pace, quality, and clear prioritisation in a high-volume environment.
  • Act as a senior point of contact for stakeholder engagement, working closely with publishers, editors, legal, data & analytics, and other RI&PE teams.
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of audit strategy and ways of working, supporting targeted, high-impact audits and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative team culture, maintaining morale and effectiveness during periods of sustained pressure.
Qualifications
  • Expertise in audit delivery, ethical‐risk assessment, and judgement‐based decision‐making.
  • Strong experience in research integrity, publishing ethics, or investigations, with the credibility to make and stand behind difficult judgement calls.
  • Proven people‐management experience, ideally leading sizeable or mixed‐experience teams in complex operational environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams and projects at pace, with excellent organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • Confidence and professionalism in presenting, influencing, and engaging stakeholders, both internally and externally.
  • A self‐starting, proactive mindset, balanced with a highly collaborative approach to working across teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and emotional intelligence, with the ability to lead teams through high‐pressure and sensitive work.
