The Role
The Purchasing Manager is responsible for developing and delivering the company's procurement strategy, ensuring the efficient sourcing of goods and services while maintaining robust supplier relationships, cost competitiveness, and supply chain resilience. The role plays a key part in driving value, supporting operational performance, and ensuring compliance with company policies, procedures, and management systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Work in accordance with all ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 policies, procedures, and management system requirements.
- Develop and implement procurement strategies across all areas of purchasing to deliver cost savings, supply chain security, and operational efficiencies.
- Lead and manage supplier relationships, including contract negotiation, agreement of commercial terms, performance monitoring, and ongoing supplier development.
- Collaborate with departmental managers and stakeholders across the business to understand requirements, align procurement activities with business objectives, and build strong working relationships.
- Conduct regular value-for-money reviews of existing supplier contracts, agreements, and procurement arrangements.
- Ensure the continuity, security, and sustainability of supply for critical products and services.
- Produce and present management information, procurement reports, performance metrics, market insights, risks, and opportunities to the Finance Director and Senior Leadership Team.
- Create, maintain, and manage an approved supplier list, ensuring all supplier documentation and due diligence requirements are completed in accordance with company procedures.
- Research and evaluate alternative suppliers and sourcing opportunities to improve quality, service, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
- Ensure purchasing systems and records accurately reflect every stage of the procurement process, from purchase order creation through to goods receipt, enabling efficient processing by the Purchase Ledger team.
- Establish and manage Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with suppliers, including performance metrics and contractual remedies where service levels are not achieved.
- Monitor supplier performance against agreed targets and implement corrective actions where necessary.
- Identify and manage procurement risks and opportunities, ensuring appropriate mitigation plans are in place.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the business by identifying procurement efficiencies and best practice approaches.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a purchasing, procurement, or supply chain management role.
- Strong supplier management and contract negotiation experience.
- Demonstrable track record of delivering cost savings and procurement efficiencies.
- Ability to analyse data and present meaningful management information.
- Strong commercial awareness and financial understanding.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience of working with purchasing, ERP, or business management systems.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
