A client of ours is looking to add another hands‑on Lead .NET Developer to own a sprint team of five to six engineers, building on a mature Azure platform at the centre of a core UK industry. The split is roughly 80% engineering, 20% people leadership which means if you've been quietly carrying line management on top of your technical work without the title or the pay, this is the role that fixes that.

What you’ll be doing

On the technical side you’ll be working across C# and .NET Core - ASP.NET, microservices, and event‑driven services on Azure, covering Service Bus, gRPC, and Docker. You’ll own architectural decisions, lead code reviews, and be the person the team looks to for technical direction.

You’ll also be working with SQL Server, MVC, Web APIs, REST, and JSON/XML services, with Git and GitFlow as your day‑to‑day source control. Unit and integration testing are built into how this team operates from the start, not something that gets added on at the end.

On the people side: real one‑to‑ones with your direct reports, genuine career development conversations, sprint allocation alongside Scrum Masters, and involvement in hiring as the team grows. The leadership here is the part that actually matters, not the part that justifies the job title.

What they’re looking for

  • Microservices and event‑driven architecture with real production exposure
  • SQL databases, comfortable getting into the data when needed
  • Git and GitFlow, with testing as default behaviour
  • Someone who can lead technical conversations and mentor engineers without losing their edge as a developer
  • Experience running one‑to‑ones and owning the people side of a team, not just the technical direction

Why this one

The setup is mature and the development practices reflect that. This is a business that knows what good looks like and operates accordingly. The Head of Development has the experience to recognise the difference and the autonomy to act on it.

The culture is award‑winning, tenure across the team is genuine, and the business carries the pace of a scale‑up with the stability of something far larger. They invest seriously in their people’s growth and professional development, and that is evident in how the team is structured and supported, not just something that appears in a job advert.
